PTO Roles and Responsibilities

The St. Bernadette PTO Board consists of the Executive Committee and the Operating Committee (collectively, the “PTO Board”). The Executive Committee consists of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Ways & Means Chair, and three Grade Representatives (K-2, 3-5, 6-8). The Operating Committee consists of the Executive Committee, as well as the following positions: a Faculty Representative, the Cultural Arts Coordinator, the Volunteer Coordinator, and the Charter Chair. The Pastor and Principal are ex officio members of the Executive Committee and the Committee.

As outlined in the PTO Charter, the following is a brief description of the PTO Board positions:

President – Chairs all meetings of the PTO Board. Also serves as an ex officio member of all committees. Appoints the Charter Chair and Auction Coordinator as required. Serves as the St. Bernadette's representative on the Diocesan Council of PTOs. The President may form ad-hoc committees as necessary.

Vice President – Performs all duties of the President in his/her absence and is the parliamentarian for the PTO Board. Serves as the legislative liaison for the school and coordinates enrollment growth. Arranges for presentations at the general membership meetings of the PTO.

Secretary – Keeps minutes of all PTO meetings. Handles PTO correspondence and coordinates with school officials to have directory of students published within the first month of school. Distributes, collects and counts any ballots and reports results to the President.

Treasurer – Serves as chair of the Finance Committee. Receives all dues and PTO monies and pays bills in a timely manner. Maintains a general ledger account of PTO funds in accordance with accepted accounting principles. Presents proposed budget to the March general membership meeting. Serves on the Auction Committee.

Ways & Means Chair – Serves as the chief fundraiser for the PTO Board. Serves on the Finance Committee. Coordinates all PTO fundraising efforts.  

Grade Representatives – Serve as Co-Chairs of the Morale Committee. Act as liaisons for the Principal and the Operating Committee with their respective grades' parents. Coordinate social activities approved by the Operating Committee. Assist in implementing phone tree.

Cultural Arts Coordinator – Designs and executes the school’s cultural arts program and serves as the school representative to the Arts Council of Fairfax County.

Volunteer Coordinator – Solicits and organizes volunteers for PTO activities and committees. Serves on the Ways & Means and Morale committees.

Faculty Representative – Serves as liaison between the faculty and the PTO. Appointed by the Principal for a one-year term.

Charter Chair – Provides advice and counsel on matters concerning interpretation, implementation and changes to the Charter. Appointed by the President for a one-year term.

The Pastor and The Principal – Serve as ex officio members of the PTO Board.

The Pastor, Principal and Charter Chair are non-voting members.
