The Saint Bernadette Catholic School band has been in existence since 1974, and Mr. Barry Ward has been the director since 1977.

The band operates as an integral part of the school curriculum stemming from the concept of educating the child with a comprehensive approach to music. A student’s spiritual, academic and artistic development provide a holistic approach to modern day education. The Saint Bernadette band has numbered up to 150 students in a given year. Grade 4 are the youngest and form the beginner band portion of the program. Starters may be from any grade level and are encouraged to join.

Our advanced band is formed from students in the 5th through 8th grade and have usually played at least one year. Lessons are given once a week; concerts are given at school, and the advanced band participates in the Diocese Band Festival and spring trips.

Each year Mr. Ward anticipates openings in the bands and encourages all those interested to join and contact him. The advanced band needs the following special instruments each year: trombone, bass, clarinet, tenor, sax, and baritone. In the fall, 4th graders are allowed to start only flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, and drums. A parent’s night is scheduled in the fall to introduce the program.
